Assalamualaikum and very good day to all participants of UniTAS2021. It has been a pleasure to address everyone at the UniTAS2021, which I understand is the first of its kind to be organized after a few baby steps have been taken in this direction. My congratulations to the Centre for Student Development and the organizing committee for reaching this far. I believe this step will not stop here. I am looking forward to this UniTAS to grow and find its footing nationally or regionally, if not internationally.
As teaching and learning is the core business of any university, any approach taken to enrich, accommodate, innovate, and develop this aspect into a new dimension should be taken seriously. We at the university’s management take pride in the effort shown by all lecturers participating in UniTAS 2021 to promote the current practices at the university during this challenging period of the VUCA situation.
I wish everyone an enjoyable session at UniTAS2021. Let me assure you that every effort counts in making UniKL a better place to welcome our young generation to pursue their dreams.
Thank you.
Prof. Dato’ Dr. Khairanum Subari
Deputy President

Universiti Kuala Lumpur
Assalamualaikum WRBT and my warmest welcome to all participants of UniTAS2021. It is a great pleasure for me to be given this opportunity to address these esteemed crowds. I remember it well back in 2019, when SDCL, specifically CSD, initiated the event focusing on Teaching Alive. In 2019, the teaching alive carried the theme of Teaching Sans Frontiers or Teaching Without Borders.
During that symposium, the academicians of Student Development were exposed to various fun teaching strategies by locally acclaimed teachers and practitioners. The sole purpose of the symposium was to enhance the existing knowledge, to cultivate innovative ideas that academicians could then take home to classrooms through the creative networking activities. Back in 2019, we could all still manage to come together physically in the same big hall for this event. Unfortunately, in 2020 and 2021, we are now still confined under the Movement Control Order due to the pandemic Covid-19. However, the current situation should not be a reason to deter us from organizing such a symposium to share knowledge and experience.
All praises be to Allah, that CSD is given the strength to organize this online symposium named UniTAS2021 with a different approach. If we remember in 2019, we sat and listened and asked questions, we shared ideas on how to make our teaching more alive. In 2020/2021 we continue to come up with a symposium where educators in Student Development can come together to share ideas on how to make classroom come to life during this VUCA situation – where all teachings are conducted online. I am really looking forward to listening to every presentation. This knowledge sharing has been made possible since this symposium is conducted online and will be conducted via pre-recorded session.
We are also blessed for the presence of our keynote speakers who will be sharing their thoughts live via our chosen medium. I am also grateful that our newly appointed President/CEO of UniKL, Datuk Dr. Roziah Omar, will be able to join us for the closing ceremony and will be announcing the winners for the Best Paper and the Best Presentation for UniTAS2021. Finally, I would like to applaud SES team of CSD and their hardworking committees for successfully organizing this event and for registering our very own journal for UniTAS under the name UniTAS Journal. We pray for Allah’s blessing that this event will run smoothly, and its outcomes will be beneficial to all. Thank you all for the unlimited and unconditional support given to UniTAS’s team.
AP. Dr. Tuan Salwani Awang @ Salleh

Assalamualaikum WRBT and very good day to all authors, peer reviewers and attendees of UniKL Teaching Alive Symposium 2021.
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to UniTAS2021, curated by Student Experience Section, under Centre for Student Development. I would like to welcome our keynote speakers, Orang Kaya-Kaya Imam Paduka Tuan Perak Dato’ Dr. Afifi Al-Akiti and Prof. Dr. Shahrulniza Musa and guests from all over Malaysia to share their knowledge and vast experience in this symposium.
The wonderful thing about UniTAS2021 is the fact that it is the first symposium with papers submission conducted under Student Development & Campus Lifestyle Division. The theme for this symposium, “Showcasing Excellence – Tribute to 2020 T&L Practices during VUCA”, is aligned with the current situation the world is facing. The symposium is conducted entirely online via various social media platforms.
For your information, there have been various knowledge enhancing activities conducted before the symposium. These activities included Pre-UniTAS2021 Workshop, Mendeley Online User Training, and various meetings and discussion sessions held with various trainers and peer reviewers. I would also like to highlight the many initiatives that we have taken prior to the symposium: the development of UniTAS2021 Website, UniTAS2021 Support Group, and engagement with Emerald Publishing. We are very grateful for the tremendous support we have received in ensuring the success of this symposium.
The primary outcome of this symposium is to serve as a platform for all SD lecturers and staff to share their research in their respective categories. In addition, we aim to create opportunities where bright minds can share ideas and exchange experiences in T&L during this period. I hope that the symposium can allow participants and attendees to broaden their views. My sincere request is for all participants and attendees to fully utilize these two days to the best of their abilities.
Lastly, thank you for your participation and have fun!

The UniKL Teaching Alive Symposium 2021 Organizing Committee are pleased to welcome you all to the UniTAS2021 Symposium which will be held from Tuesday, 14 September to Wednesday, 15 September 2021.
We have two full days of plenary symposium program covering all aspects of Student Development at Universiti Kuala Lumpur. The scientific content will be presented in a pre-recorded video presentation via social media platforms, including FB Live, UniTAS2021 Website and MS Teams. The symposium also provides opportunities for exchanging ideas, creating networks, fostering learning, inspiring, and provoking relevant conversations.
We are also pleased to announce that we have received 53 submissions from all the five categories offered. The categories are mainly the prime area that we at CSD focus on. They are the English Language teaching, the Foreign Language teaching, Mata Pelajaran Pengajian Umum, the Ulul Albab teaching, and one open category that could attract other fields that are not specifically mentioned. This 2-day symposium will be filled with presentations that will be conducted live from two parallel rooms.
We will also bring to you keynotes speakers to talk about what is in trends in teaching and learning. Not forgetting that there will be awards given to the Best Paper as well as the Best Presenter. With Allah’s blessing, we are trying to take this symposium to the next level by initiating CSD very own UniTAS Journal. By having this UniTAS Journal we are hoping that in the future, academicians and staffs will have a platform to publish papers that are remarkably close to our hearts, and are related to Teaching and Learning experiences, tips, and classroom activities. We would like to encourage everyone to embrace UniTAS Journal as our own and will keep helping it grow to become one of the prestigious references all academicians could have.
Thank you for choosing to attend this symposium. Please contact the Organizing Committee for any enquiries at any stage of the symposium.

Brief Guide to Peer Review
The following is a summary of peer review method taken from Wiley, which can
provide a guide for authors in this workshop.
1. Read through the paper. The first read through is a skim-read. The first read will
form an initial impression of the paper, which eventually can help to decide the
quality of the paper. The below are some questions to ask yourself when reviewing
the paper.
a. What is the main question addressed by the research? Is it relevant and
interesting?
b. How original is the topic? What does it add to the subject area compared
with other published material?
c. Is the paper well written? Is the text clear and easy to read?
d. Are the conclusions consistent with the evidence and arguments presented?
Do they address the main question posed?
e. If the author is disagreeing significantly with the current academic
consensus, do they have a substantial case? If not, what would be required
to make their case credible?
f. If the paper includes tables or figures, what do they add to the paper? Do
they aid understanding or are they redundant or unnecessary?
2. Spot major flaws. Examples of flaw include arriving at a conclusion that contrasts
with the initial purpose or objective of the research work or using a method that is
not approved or not inappropriate.
a. Identify flaws in the experimental work. Examine the design of experiment
and identify whether the number of samples is sufficient for analytical type
of research paper. Is there a reference which support the quantity of samples
used?
b. Is the questionnaire used verified or validated?
c. Information flaws.
i. Insufficient data
ii. Unclear data tables
iii. Contradictory data that either are not self-consistent or disagree with
the conclusions
iv. Confirmatory data that adds little, if anything, to current
understanding – unless strong arguments for such repetition are made
d. Make remarks after the first read and compose your thoughts about the
paper.
i. After the initial read, include any major flaws you found, write a
short remarks of your review – summarize the research
question addressed and the contribution of the work.
3. Second read through of the paper. After the first read and spotting the flaws, you
may want to re-read the paper to form a final thought about the quality of the paper.
Keep in mind that a good paper is likely to be accepted if the article has substantial
contribution to the knowledge base or understanding of the subject matter. In the
second read, it is recommended that you conduct a thorough review. Therefore,
potential errors that you may look for are below:
a. Any places where the meaning is unclear or ambiguous
b. Any factual errors
c. Any invalid arguments
d. Does the title properly reflect the subject of the paper?
e. Does the abstract provide an accessible summary of the paper?
f. Do the keywords accurately reflect the content?
g. Is the paper an appropriate length?
h. Are the key messages short, accurate and clear?
4. Methods explained is adequate, clear and most important discussed in detailed and
possible to be replicable by other researchers.
5. Results and discussion should tell a coherent story. The authors idea can be easily
grasp if the flow of idea is coherent from introduction until it is concluded. A good
paper should be able to draw the reader’s attention with clear discussion and the
flow of idea is coherent. Does the paper explained what was discovered or
confirmed? The outcome of the work should be critical on the data gathered.
6. Finally, check the references. Confirm the references within the body of paper is
sorted in ascending order and the list of references are recent (suggest at least no
more than 5 years old)
